Best Custom Software Developers in Hampshire

Hampshire has a real cluster of software firms around Southampton and the Solent, and a much larger cluster of landing pages written by firms in Devon, London and Oxfordshire. This guide tells you which is which.

Rob Sherwood, co-founder of Dev Partners
Quick answer: The bespoke software firms with a verified Hampshire office are Rareloop and JDD Agency (both Southampton), Lumico Digital (Lee-on-the-Solent) and Shift Digital (Winchester). Dev Partners are based in Gravesend, Kent and work with Hampshire businesses remotely — we have no Hampshire office and do not claim one. The right choice depends on whether your project is a product build, an industrial or embedded system, or the integration of the systems you already run.

The firms ranking for “bespoke software Hampshire” are mostly not in Hampshire

We worked through the companies appearing for bespoke software searches in Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Basingstoke and Fareham, and checked each address against the firm's own contact page and Companies House. The top organic results included a firm in Seaton in Devon, one in central London, one in Warwick and one in Wantage — all of them running full Hampshire location pages.

None of that makes them bad at the job. Bespoke software is built remotely far more often than not, and we are a Kent firm writing this, so we are hardly in a position to object. The problem is only ever the pretence. If a supplier is imprecise about something as checkable as their own address, it is worth being more careful than usual about the rest of what they tell you. Every location below is sourced, and where we could not verify something, it is marked as not stated.

How we evaluated these firms

We only included firms we could place in Hampshire from their own contact page or from Companies House, plus ourselves, clearly marked as being based in Kent.

🛠️

Bespoke code vs configured platforms

There's a real difference between writing software from scratch and assembling configurable or low-code platforms. For simple needs, either can work. For genuinely custom workflows, only the former gives you a system that fits exactly and that you fully own.

🔗

Integration capability

Most bespoke projects need to connect to something: an accounts package, an ERP, a warehouse system, a third-party API. Doing that reliably is a distinct skill, and not every firm has the depth for complex integrations.

📈

Track record at your scale

A firm whose typical job is a small internal tool will be stretched by a business-critical system. We looked at the actual scale and type of work each has delivered.

🤝

Who actually does the work

Some firms pitch senior people and deliver through junior or outsourced developers. We prioritised those where the people who talk to you are the people who write your code.

💷

Where they are actually based

A lot of firms publish a landing page for a county they have no office in. Every address on this page came from the firm's own contact page or from Companies House, never from a regional landing page.

Custom software developers in Hampshire

#2
Rareloop
Product studio · 22 Basepoint, Andersons Road, Southampton SO14
Best for product and app builds

Rareloop are a Southampton product studio, publishing their Basepoint address and a local landline on their contact page. Their service list runs websites, web apps, mobile apps and bespoke software development, with Laravel and PHP named explicitly, and they position themselves around helping “forward thinking organisations solve difficult problems” rather than around any one sector.

Their published work leans towards products rather than back-office systems — their Relay case study is a SaaS platform integrating with Breathe HR and pushing notifications into Slack and Teams, which shows real integration competence without being ERP or warehouse work. If what you are building is a product, an app or a platform with users, they are a strong Southampton option. If it is a system that has to sit behind your operations and talk to your stock and your accounts, test that ground specifically.

#3
JDD Agency
Custom systems and integrations · Union Castle House, Canute Road, Southampton SO14
Best for integration-heavy systems

JDD Agency publish a Southampton office on Canute Road and take a firm line on bespoke work: “if the tool doesn't exist, we build it — stop forcing your unique processes into off-the-shelf boxes.” Their services name API development and system integration, custom workflow management systems, “building centralized dashboards, CRMs, and ERP tools”, data analytics and SaaS engineering.

They are the only Hampshire firm we found that states ERP work outright, and they back it with a named client testimonial referring to “CRM, ERP and Zebra Scanners”. They also publish a starting price of £10,000 for a bespoke platform, including architecture, integration, QA and cloud deployment, which is more transparency than almost anyone else on this page offers. One gap worth noting: they do not publish a company registration number, and we could not match them to a Companies House record, so if that matters to your procurement, ask them for it directly.

#4
Lumico Digital
Software, embedded and industrial automation · Daedalus Park, Lee-on-the-Solent PO13 · Company 10636356
Best for industrial and embedded work

Lumico Digital Ltd are at Daedalus Park near Lee-on-the-Solent and state plainly that they are “based in Hampshire, UK” with the whole team working under one roof. Their range is unusually wide: digital transformation, cloud consultancy, mobile and web applications, system integrations, bespoke software, industrial process automation, IoT and embedded systems.

Their case studies bear that out — smart water technology, energy installation visualisation in AR, Premier League photo products — and skew industrial and product rather than retail or back-office. They list system integrations as a service but name no ERP, accounting or warehouse platform. If your project has hardware, sensors or a factory floor anywhere near it, they are the most obviously relevant firm in the county.

#5
Shift Digital
Bespoke web and application development · 47 Southgate Street, Winchester SO23 · Company 09680976
Best for bespoke web applications

Shift Digital Limited work out of Winchester and describe themselves as “a digital technology agency specialising in bespoke web design, application development, e-commerce and digital campaign design”. On the software side they will build bespoke solutions or deploy an established platform, depending on what the job needs.

They are the least specialised firm on this page, which cuts both ways: good if your project is a web application with a design and campaign component, less so if it is a business-critical operational system. They publish no integration capability and no pricing, so if either matters, put it on the table in the first conversation.

The custom software work we do for Hampshire businesses

We work with manufacturers, distributors, logistics firms and service businesses across Hampshire that want better visibility, less manual admin and systems that finally talk to each other.

Dev Partners · Gravesend, Kent

Bespoke software for businesses that have outgrown off-the-shelf

The Hampshire businesses that call us usually have one of two problems: a process that has outgrown spreadsheets, or software that almost does the job but not quite. That is the work we specialise in — writing the system that fits how your business actually runs, rather than bending your business around someone else's product.

Every line is written in-house in Gravesend by senior developers. We are not in Hampshire and we will not pretend the drive is nothing, but no part of your project is outsourced and you deal directly with the people building it.

  • Bespoke CRMs and customer management systems
  • Warehouse and order management systems (WMS)
  • Booking, scheduling and quoting tools
  • Workflow and process automation that removes manual admin
  • System and API integrations: ERP, accounting, fulfilment and third-party platforms
  • Internal tools, dashboards and reporting
  • Legacy system modernisation, including older databases and COBOL

Custom software development across Hampshire

We work with businesses right across Hampshire. These are the areas we are asked about most:

We also work with businesses in Winchester, Basingstoke, Fareham, Farnborough and Andover. We are based in Kent, not Hampshire — everything is delivered remotely by our own developers, and we travel when a project warrants it.

How to choose a custom software developer in Hampshire

The questions worth asking before you sign anything, and what good answers look like.

1

Is it bespoke code or a configured platform?

Ask directly. Some firms write software from scratch; others assemble configurable or low-code platforms. For genuinely custom workflows you want code built around your business, and that you fully own.

2

Who actually writes the code?

Some firms pitch senior staff and deliver through junior or outsourced developers. Ask who writes the code day to day, and who your point of contact will be throughout the project.

3

Have they built something like yours?

Ask for specific examples relevant to your sector and the type of system you need, not just a logo wall, but real detail about what they built and the problems they solved.

4

Can they handle your integrations?

If your software needs to connect to accounts, an ERP, a warehouse system or a third-party API, confirm they have done that kind of integration before rather than assuming it's included.

5

Do you own the code and the data?

With bespoke software you should end up owning the source code and your data outright. Check there is no lock-in that leaves you dependent on one supplier.

6

What does support look like after launch?

Software needs maintaining and evolving. Ask how post-launch work is handled, how quickly they respond, and whether you'll be dealing with developers or account managers.

Hampshire Software Development FAQs

No. We are in Gravesend, Kent, and we work with Hampshire businesses remotely. We are upfront about it because several firms ranking for bespoke software in Hampshire are based in Devon, London, Warwickshire or Oxfordshire and publish Hampshire landing pages anyway.

Yes. There is no minimum project size. We work with owner-run firms in Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Winchester as well as larger companies. What matters is that there is a real operational problem to solve rather than a wish for something shinier.

It depends on the scale. Smaller automation tools or internal dashboards start in the low thousands. Larger bespoke systems are quoted clearly up front, in writing, with no licence traps and no hidden costs.

Yes, and it is our strongest ground. ERPs, accounting packages, warehouse systems and third-party APIs. It is also the capability least clearly advertised by the Hampshire firms we looked at, so it is worth asking whoever you speak to what they have actually connected before.

Often, yes. We rebuild and extend existing systems as well as writing new ones, and we will tell you honestly whether what you have is worth keeping. Starting over is sometimes cheaper and sometimes not.

Yes, outright. You own the source code and your data, and there are no licence fees to keep paying us. If you decided to take it elsewhere tomorrow, you could.

Small automations or dashboards take a few weeks. Larger bespoke systems usually run several months from discovery to launch. We agree milestones and dates before starting, and we tell you early if something slips.

Rob Sherwood, co-founder of Dev Partners

Good software is built around how your business actually runs, not how a vendor wishes it did. We keep everything in-house, so from day one you're dealing with the people writing the code — no offshore, no account managers, and no disappearing act once it's live.
