Updated 2026 · Custom Software Development · Yorkshire
Leeds and Sheffield have long-established software consultancies, several of them older than most of the agencies competing with them. This guide covers the ones with a verifiable Yorkshire base and says plainly what each is actually good at.

Every firm on this page describes itself as building bespoke software for businesses that need it. Underneath that, the differences are enormous. Audacia works on regulated enterprise projects for the likes of Pfizer and Scania. Answer Digital has been delivering data and integration work for the NHS, the MoD and Yorkshire Water since 1998. Illuminaries has been writing .NET and SQL Server systems in Sheffield since 1991, largely for the public sector. PCM Systems sells software development as one of seven services, next to IT support and VoIP.
Pick the wrong one for your project and you will either be the smallest client on the books or the largest. Two other things are worth knowing before you start ringing round: not one firm in this set publishes any pricing at all, and only a minority state what they can actually integrate with. Both are fair questions to open with. Every address below came from the firm's own contact page or from Companies House.
Bespoke software firms genuinely based in Yorkshire, with each location taken from the firm's own contact page or its Companies House record.

We only included firms we could place in Yorkshire from their own contact page or from Companies House, plus ourselves, clearly marked as being based in Kent.
There's a real difference between writing software from scratch and assembling configurable or low-code platforms. For simple needs, either can work. For genuinely custom workflows, only the former gives you a system that fits exactly and that you fully own.
Most bespoke projects need to connect to something: an accounts package, an ERP, a warehouse system, a third-party API. Doing that reliably is a distinct skill, and not every firm has the depth for complex integrations.
A firm whose typical job is a small internal tool will be stretched by a business-critical system. We looked at the actual scale and type of work each has delivered.
Some firms pitch senior people and deliver through junior or outsourced developers. We prioritised those where the people who talk to you are the people who write your code.
A lot of firms publish a landing page for a county they have no office in. Every address on this page came from the firm's own contact page or from Companies House, never from a regional landing page.
We are a Kent firm and Yorkshire is not our patch, so take the recommendation with that in mind. Dev Partners have been building bespoke software in Gravesend since 2008 — CRMs, warehouse and order management systems, booking and quoting tools, and the workflow automation that replaces processes currently running on spreadsheets and memory.
Where we differ from the firms below is scale and focus. Audacia and Answer Digital are enterprise consultancies working on regulated programmes; they are excellent at that and will not be cheap for a mid-market operational system. We write software for owner-run and mid-market businesses, in-house, with no offshore teams and no account-management layer. Integration is our strongest suit — ERPs, accounting packages, warehouse systems and third-party APIs — and it is the capability least clearly claimed by anyone else on this page.
If your project is a regulated enterprise programme, talk to Audacia or Answer Digital. If it is an operational system that has to fit your business exactly and talk to everything else you run, that is what we do all day.
Audacia Consulting Limited work out of The Calls in Leeds, with a second office in the City of London. Their services run software development, systems integration, mobile and front-end development, AI-assisted engineering, cloud and testing, and their stated ground is “regulated industries” — pharmaceuticals, construction, oil and gas, government, healthcare, finance and transport.
The client list backs the positioning: O2, Pfizer, Scania, Persimmon, Bellway, British Gypsum and NIHR. This is enterprise consultancy, and priced accordingly — they publish no figures. They sell systems integration generically but name no ERP, warehouse or accounting platform, so if your project depends on a specific one, ask. For a large, compliance-sensitive programme in Yorkshire, they are an obvious shortlist entry. For a mid-market operational tool, you are likely to be their smallest client.
Answer Digital Limited have been registered at Union Mills in Leeds since 1998, which makes them one of the longest-established software firms in the city, with a second office in Manchester. Their focus is data and integration — helping organisations “unlock the value of their data by connecting complex systems, breaking down silos” — alongside AI and automation and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Their work sits overwhelmingly in regulated sectors: NHS bodies, Yorkshire Water, the MoD, financial services and utilities. If your problem is that you have several large systems that do not talk to each other, and the data matters more than the interface, they are strong on exactly that. They describe systems and data integration rather than ERP or warehouse integration specifically, so name your platforms early. No pricing is published.
Illuminaries Limited have been going since 1991 and describe themselves as “Sheffield-based, working nationally and internationally”. Their site publishes a company number, VAT number and Sheffield phone number but no street address; the Sum Studios address comes from Companies House and is consistent with the Sheffield claim. Their work is software development, database development and web development, built on Microsoft .NET and SQL Server, with data migration, business intelligence and IT consultancy alongside.
The client base is predominantly public sector and education: NHS trusts including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, UNICEF and Age UK Sheffield, plus manufacturers including Syngenta. Thirty-plus years on the same technology stack is a genuine asset if that is your world. On cost, they say only that it varies and is “not as much as you might think”, which is honest enough but not a number. They make no ERP or warehouse integration claim.
PCM Systems Ltd are in Morley on the south-west side of Leeds, and software development is one of seven services they offer — the others being IT support, Microsoft 365, cyber security, VoIP, cloud backup and Google Workspace. Their software work is organised by vertical: manufacturing, legal and HR, breweries, property management, financial, insurance, education and IoT.
The manufacturing offering is the most concrete on this page in operational terms, listing stock control, purchase orders, sales orders and resource planning, and they name FreeAgent as an accounting integration. They do not use the word ERP or name Sage, Xero or NetSuite. For a Yorkshire business that wants one supplier handling both the IT and a bespoke system, that combination is genuinely convenient. For a complex standalone build, a firm that does nothing else will have more depth.
We work with manufacturers, distributors, logistics firms and service businesses across Yorkshire that want better visibility, less manual admin and systems that finally talk to each other.
The Yorkshire businesses that call us usually have one of two problems: a process that has outgrown spreadsheets, or software that almost does the job but not quite. That is the work we specialise in — writing the system that fits how your business actually runs, rather than bending your business around someone else's product.
Every line is written in-house in Gravesend by senior developers. We are not in Yorkshire and we are not going to dress that up, but no part of your project is outsourced and you deal directly with the people building it.
We work with businesses right across Yorkshire. These are the areas we are asked about most:
We also work with businesses in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull and Doncaster. We are based in Kent, not Yorkshire — everything is delivered remotely by our own developers, and we travel when a project warrants it.
The questions worth asking before you sign anything, and what good answers look like.
Ask directly. Some firms write software from scratch; others assemble configurable or low-code platforms. For genuinely custom workflows you want code built around your business, and that you fully own.
Some firms pitch senior staff and deliver through junior or outsourced developers. Ask who writes the code day to day, and who your point of contact will be throughout the project.
Ask for specific examples relevant to your sector and the type of system you need, not just a logo wall, but real detail about what they built and the problems they solved.
If your software needs to connect to accounts, an ERP, a warehouse system or a third-party API, confirm they have done that kind of integration before rather than assuming it's included.
With bespoke software you should end up owning the source code and your data outright. Check there is no lock-in that leaves you dependent on one supplier.
Software needs maintaining and evolving. Ask how post-launch work is handled, how quickly they respond, and whether you'll be dealing with developers or account managers.

We have worked with Dev Partners for 7 years and can highly recommend them for their expertise and excellent customer service.
No. We are in Gravesend, Kent, and we work with Yorkshire businesses remotely. Leeds and Sheffield have long-established software firms of their own, and we would rather compare honestly against them than imply we are down the road.
Differently rather than better. Audacia and Answer Digital work on large regulated programmes and are very good at it. We build operational systems for owner-run and mid-market businesses, in-house, at a scale where you deal with the developers rather than a delivery manager.
Yes. There is no minimum project size. Some of our best work has been a single system that removed a week of manual admin a month from a business of fifteen people.
It depends on the scale. Smaller automation tools or internal dashboards start in the low thousands. Larger bespoke systems are quoted clearly up front, in writing. Worth knowing: none of the Yorkshire firms we looked at publishes any pricing at all, so ask early.
Yes, and it is our strongest ground. ERPs, accounting packages, warehouse systems and third-party APIs. Most firms sell integration generically without naming what they have actually connected, so it is a fair question to put to anyone you shortlist.
Yes, outright. You own the source code and your data, with no licence fees and no lock-in. If you wanted to move it to another supplier tomorrow, nothing would stop you.
Small automations or dashboards take a few weeks. Larger bespoke systems usually run several months from discovery to launch. We agree milestones and dates before starting and flag slippage early rather than at the end.
Good software is built around how your business actually runs, not how a vendor wishes it did. We keep everything in-house, so from day one you're dealing with the people writing the code — no offshore, no account managers, and no disappearing act once it's live.
Whether you're replacing a manual process, rebuilding software you've outgrown, or connecting systems that don't talk to each other, we'll give you a straight assessment of what's involved and what it would cost.
