How Shirtsleeves moved from Visualsoft to Shopify, TRIMS and all

Clothing is where migrations get fiddly. Every product comes in sizes and colours, every one of those needs a SKU the shop's own system recognises, and customers expect their account and their store credit to still be there. None of that is glamorous, but it is the bit that has to be right.
What changed for Shirtsleeves
The same boutique online, on a platform Shirtsleeves can run themselves, with its TRIMS integration in place.
No downtime
The move happened without the online shop closing, and the physical shop carried on as normal.
Search traffic held
More than 20,000 old Visualsoft addresses were mapped to the new site, so rankings and old links carried across.

Shopify's monthly cost came in below what Shirtsleeves were paying before.

Shirtsleeves
Shirtsleeves is an independent women's clothing boutique, with a physical shop and an online store selling brands such as b.young and Oui.
Their online store had been on Visualsoft for some time. With the contract coming up for renewal, they wanted lower running costs and the freedom to change the site themselves.
The situation: Thousands of size and colour variations, a large and loyal customer base with store credit on their accounts, and a TRIMS integration the new store had to work with.

Customers, store credit and a TRIMS integration
We moved around 28,000 customer accounts from Visualsoft and matched them against anyone who already had a Shopify account, so nobody ended up with two. Customers' store credit balances came across with them, so nothing anyone was owed got lost in the move.
For the catalogue, 1,500 products and their 9,600 size and colour variations came across by script, with larger zoom images extracted from the old site, product titles and web addresses tidied up, and missing tags added along the way.
We also reworked the product codes on every variation to match TRIMS, and built the TRIMS integration with the new store. Finally, more than 20,000 old addresses were mapped to the new site before the switch.

A complete move from Visualsoft to Shopify in 4 to 8 weeks, with the shop and the website trading throughout.
