We’ve been talking a lot lately about how to move projects faster. Not with bigger teams or longer hours, but with fewer “yeses.”

It’s easy to believe that progress means saying yes, yes to new features, yes to quick improvements, yes to every bright idea that pops up in a meeting. After all, more sounds better. But every addition has a cost. Each “just one more thing” adds complexity, more testing, more coordination, and another opportunity for something to go wrong. Before long, the simple project that was meant to ship in weeks is stuck in the weeds.

The teams that move fastest aren’t working miracles. They’ve just learned to say no, a lot. They protect the scope of the work, focus on the problem they set out to solve, and don’t get distracted by everything else they *could* be doing. That discipline is what separates projects that finish from those that fizzle.

Of course, saying no isn’t easy. It feels like you’re missing opportunities or letting good ideas go. But the truth is, clarity creates speed. When you strip away the non-essentials, your priorities sharpen and decisions get simpler. The work flows instead of fights back.

So if you want to ship faster, start with a “no.” Say no early, no often, and no without guilt. The more you focus on what really matters, the quicker you’ll deliver something that actually makes a difference.
