OpenCart to Shopify Migration

Most people who ring us about OpenCart are not unhappy with the shop. They are stuck: an upgrade that keeps getting deferred because it would break the extensions, and a shrinking pool of developers who still know the platform. Moving to Shopify is usually the cheaper way out.

Jason Wheeler, co-founder of Dev Partners
Who is doing the work: a two-founder UK team that has been migrating stores onto Shopify since 2008, including Chi Chi London, Motel Rocks and Sara Miller. Full data migration, 301 redirect mapping, your product options mapped properly to Shopify variants, and the shop trading throughout. No offshore development.

With OpenCart the thing to settle first is the options. Shopify is stricter about variants than OpenCart is, so we work out early whether your catalogue maps straight across or needs rethinking. Get that decided up front and the rest of the migration is routine. Leave it to the build and it is not.

Co-founder, Dev Partners
We have worked with Jason & his team to develop our Shopify store, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. The design is clean, modern, and perfectly aligned with our brand identity, while the build is fast, responsive, and easy to manage on the backend. They clearly understood our vision and delivered a store we’re genuinely proud of. Highly recommend to any brand looking for a top-quality Shopify partner.

We move shops onto Shopify for a living

Dev Partners · Shopify Select Partner · Migrating stores since 2008

The platform you are leaving changes the plan. It does not change whether we can do it.

Chi Chi London, Motel Rocks and Sara Miller all came onto Shopify with us from other platforms, with large catalogues, awkward variant structures and back-office systems that had to keep working on the other side. Those were not OpenCart stores, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What carries across is the process: audit first, map the data and the URLs before anyone touches a theme, and keep the shop trading throughout.

What is specific to OpenCart is the option structure and the URLs. Those are the two places an OpenCart migration goes wrong, and they are both solvable if they are dealt with before the build rather than during it.

  • Full product, customer and order history migration out of your existing database
  • Product options assessed against Shopify's variant model before you are quoted
  • The live store crawled for real URLs, then every one 301 redirected before go-live
  • Custom Shopify theme built for your catalogue, not a template with your logo on it
  • UK team, no offshore development, no subcontracting

Why retailers leave OpenCart for Shopify

Rarely because they hate it. Usually because keeping it going has quietly become the expensive option.

🧱

The upgrade you keep putting off

Moving between major OpenCart versions often breaks extensions and any modified core files, so the upgrade gets deferred. Years later you are several versions behind on software that is harder to secure. If you are facing that anyway, it is the right moment to ask whether the upgrade is worth doing.

🔎

Finding an OpenCart developer is getting harder

The pool of developers who know the platform well has been shrinking for years. That shows up as slower fixes, higher day rates and more risk concentrated in whoever currently holds the knowledge. Shopify has an enormous developer and agency market by comparison.

🧩

A thinner extension ecosystem

OpenCart's extension marketplace is considerably smaller than Shopify's, and a good deal of it is no longer actively maintained. Finding a current, supported extension for something ordinary is harder than it should be, and abandoned extensions become your problem.

🛡️

Hosting, security and PCI are yours

OpenCart is self-hosted, so server patching, backups, SSL and PCI scope all sit with you or your host. Shopify takes that on centrally. For a small team that is a genuine reduction in both cost and things that can go wrong unattended.

Performance without server work

Keeping an OpenCart store quick means caching, image handling, database housekeeping and a hosting plan matched to your traffic. Shopify runs fast on its own infrastructure, which helps conversion and rankings without anyone tuning a server.

🔗

Integrations that already exist

Connecting OpenCart to a modern ERP, 3PL or accounting package usually means bespoke work. On Shopify a great deal of that is off-the-shelf, and where it is not, the APIs are well documented and stable. That is the kind of work we do daily.

What an OpenCart migration actually involves

It is not an export and an import. Here is the full scope.

1

Audit and option mapping

We look at your OpenCart version, your catalogue and option structure, any vQmod or OCmod modifications, your extensions and your SEO footprint. The options question gets answered here, before you are quoted, not during the build.

2

Data migration

Products and options, images, categories and subcategories, manufacturers, customers and address books, full order history, reviews and coupons, read straight out of your existing database rather than a lossy CSV export.

3

URLs, redirects and SEO

OpenCart stores often serve a mixture of SEO keyword URLs and index.php?route= URLs, sometimes several pointing at one product. We crawl the live site to find what Google actually knows about, then 301 every one of them.

4

Theme design and build

A custom Shopify theme built around your brand and the way your catalogue is actually browsed. Not a stock theme with the logo swapped, and not a copy of an OpenCart layout that was itself a compromise.

5

Integrations and custom functionality

Anything your modifications or extensions were doing that still needs to happen: stock and accounting connections, feeds, shipping rules, or bespoke functionality rebuilt as proper Shopify code.

6

Testing and go-live

Tested against your real data and real order scenarios, then a planned DNS switchover at your quietest hour with a final data sync immediately beforehand. You keep trading throughout.

Not on OpenCart?

We run the same process for Magento, Visualsoft, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and bespoke PHP shops. The platform changes what the data and URL mapping look like; it does not change the approach.

OpenCart to Shopify: common questions

What comes up on the first call, roughly in the order it comes up.

Most take between 6 and 14 weeks. The two things that move that number are how your product options are structured and how much custom work sits in vQmod or OCmod modifications.

A reasonably standard store with a clean catalogue moves quickly. A store on an older version with heavily modified core files, a large option-based catalogue and several third-party extensions takes longer to do properly. You get a real timeline after the audit.

This is the single biggest technical question in an OpenCart migration and it is worth understanding before you start. OpenCart treats options as add-ons attached to a product, with effectively no limit on how many you can stack. Shopify uses a stricter model: up to three option types per product, with each combination being a distinct variant.

Most catalogues map across cleanly. Catalogues that use options for made-to-order configuration, personalisation or long dropdown lists do not fit the variant model and need a different approach — usually line-item properties, a product configurator, or restructuring the catalogue. We work out which of those you need during the audit, before quoting, because it is the thing most likely to change the number.

Not if the redirect mapping is done properly, though OpenCart needs more care than most platforms. Depending on how your store was set up you may have SEO keyword URLs, or you may still be serving index.php?route=product/product&product_id=123 style URLs, or a mixture of both with several URLs resolving to the same product.

We crawl the live store to find every URL Google actually knows about rather than working from a database export, then map each one to its Shopify equivalent and implement the 301s before go-live. Meta titles, descriptions and image alt text come across too.

Products and their options, product images, categories and subcategories, manufacturers, customer accounts and address books, full order history, reviews, coupons, and information pages.

Anything without a direct Shopify equivalent is mapped to the nearest sensible structure or stored in metafields rather than quietly dropped. You are told which parts of your data fall into that category before the migration starts, not afterwards.

It makes staying harder, not leaving. Being on an older release is one of the most common reasons people call us: upgrading between major versions frequently breaks extensions and modified core files, so the upgrade gets deferred, and then deferred again.

Migrating reads the data out of your existing database, so the version you are on affects the mapping work rather than whether it is possible at all. If you are facing a painful upgrade anyway, that is usually the right moment to ask whether the upgrade is worth doing.

Yes. Your OpenCart store stays live and selling while we build the Shopify store in parallel. Go-live is a planned DNS switchover rather than a shutdown.

We run a final data sync immediately before the cutover so recent orders and customers come across, and orders in flight are handled deliberately. A well-planned switchover usually means less than an hour of interruption, scheduled for your quietest trading window.

The common reasons are practical rather than ideological. OpenCart is self-hosted, so hosting, security patching, backups and PCI scope are all your responsibility. Its extension ecosystem is considerably smaller than Shopify's and a good deal of it is no longer actively maintained. Developers who know OpenCart well are harder to find and getting harder, which makes support slower and more expensive over time.

Shopify takes the infrastructure off you and has a far larger pool of apps, developers and integrations. That said — if OpenCart is running fine and nothing is blocking you, there is no urgency, and we will tell you so rather than invent a reason to sell you a project.

Thinking about leaving OpenCart?

Tell us about your store and we will give you a straight view on what the move would involve.

You do not need to know what the answer is. The store URL, roughly how many products, and which OpenCart version you are on is enough to start. If we think you are better off staying where you are for now, we will tell you that instead.

What we will cover:

  • Your catalogue size and how your product options are structured
  • Whether those options map to Shopify variants or need rethinking
  • What happens to your URLs and your rankings
  • Any modifications or extensions that need rebuilding
  • A realistic timeline and a fixed price, in writing

One of us replies within one working day, usually the same one.
