WooCommerce to Shopify Migration

WooCommerce is a perfectly good way to start selling. The trouble is that you end up running a shop and a web server at the same time: WordPress updates, plugin licences, security patches, and a caching setup that somebody has to understand. Moving to Shopify hands all of that back.

Jason Wheeler, co-founder of Dev Partners
Who is doing the work: a two-founder UK team that has been migrating stores onto Shopify since 2008, including Chi Chi London, Motel Rocks and Sara Miller. Full data migration, 301 redirect mapping, custom theme build and integrations, all in-house with no offshore development, and your current store trading throughout.

The hard part of a WooCommerce move is never the products. It is working out which of the thirty-odd plugins are actually holding the shop up and which ones somebody installed in 2019 and forgot. We go through that list properly before we quote, because that is what the timeline really depends on.

Jason Wheeler
Co-founder, Dev Partners
We have worked with Jason & his team to develop our Shopify store, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. The design is clean, modern, and perfectly aligned with our brand identity, while the build is fast, responsive, and easy to manage on the backend. They clearly understood our vision and delivered a store we’re genuinely proud of. Highly recommend to any brand looking for a top-quality Shopify partner.

We move shops onto Shopify for a living

Dev Partners · Shopify Select Partner · Migrating stores since 2008

The platform you are leaving changes the plan. It does not change whether we can do it.

Chi Chi London, Motel Rocks and Sara Miller all came onto Shopify with us from other platforms, with large catalogues, awkward variant structures and back-office systems that had to keep working on the other side. Those were not WooCommerce stores, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What carries across is the process: audit first, map the data and the URLs before anyone touches a theme, and keep the shop trading throughout.

What is specific to WooCommerce is the plugin archaeology. Every Woo store we look at has functionality spread across the theme, a child theme, a handful of paid extensions and usually some code in functions.php that nobody has opened in years. Finding all of it before we quote is the job.

  • Full product, customer and order history migration, including variable products
  • Every URL mapped and 301 redirected before go-live, not after
  • A plugin-by-plugin assessment, delivered with the quote
  • Custom Shopify theme built for your catalogue, not a template with your logo on it
  • UK team, no offshore development, no subcontracting

Why retailers leave WooCommerce for Shopify

WooCommerce is not a bad platform. It is a demanding one, and the demands grow faster than the shop does.

🔌

The plugin stack stops being manageable

A mature WooCommerce store commonly runs thirty to fifty plugins. Each one is a licence to renew, an update that can break checkout, and another author you are trusting. Most of what they do is native on Shopify, so the stack largely disappears with the migration.

🛡️

Security and updates are your problem

WordPress and its plugin ecosystem are among the most-targeted software on the internet, and on WooCommerce the patching is yours to do. Shopify handles platform security and PCI compliance centrally. That is one fewer thing that can go badly wrong on a Sunday.

Speed needs constant attention

Keeping a Woo store fast means caching layers, image optimisation, database housekeeping and a hosting plan that matches your traffic. Shopify is fast on its own infrastructure without any of that being your job, which helps both conversion and rankings.

📈

Traffic spikes stop being frightening

A sale, a press mention or an influencer post can take a self-hosted Woo store down unless somebody has scaled the server in advance. Shopify absorbs the peak. You stop having to plan infrastructure around your own marketing.

🛒

Checkout you do not have to maintain

Shopify's checkout is one of the most heavily optimised and tested in ecommerce, and it is maintained for you. On WooCommerce your checkout is a stack of plugins on your own server, and every update is a chance to break the one page that has to work.

👥

Your team can run it without a developer

Day-to-day changes on WooCommerce often mean a developer, a staging site and a deployment. Shopify's admin is built for non-technical staff, which frees your development budget for things that actually grow the business.

What a WooCommerce migration actually involves

It is not an export and an import. Here is the full scope.

1

Audit and plugin triage

We go through your installation: theme and child theme, every active plugin, anything custom in the codebase, your integrations and your SEO footprint. You get the plugin list sorted into native, app, or rebuild before you commit.

2

Data migration

Products and variable products, images, categories, tags, customers, full order history, reviews and coupons. Anything without a direct Shopify equivalent is mapped deliberately or put in metafields, never silently dropped.

3

URLs, redirects and SEO

Woo's /product/ and /product-category/ paths do not exist on Shopify, so every URL changes. We map each one to its equivalent, implement the 301s before go-live, and carry across titles, descriptions and alt text.

4

Content and the blog

WordPress pages and posts migrated into Shopify, or WordPress kept as the blog alongside Shopify if you have a large content operation. We will tell you which makes sense for the amount of content you actually have.

5

Theme, integrations and rebuilds

A custom Shopify theme for your brand and catalogue, plus anything from the plugin triage that needs rebuilding as real code: stock and accounting integrations, feeds, subscriptions, or bespoke functionality.

6

Testing and go-live

Tested against your real data and your real order scenarios, then a planned DNS switchover at your quietest hour with a final data sync immediately beforehand. You keep trading throughout.

Not on WooCommerce?

We run the same process for Magento, Visualsoft, OpenCart, BigCommerce and bespoke PHP shops. The platform changes what the data and URL mapping look like; it does not change the approach.

What our clients say

19 clients. A few of their words.

Working with Dev Partners to redesign and modernise our WMS system: the whole process has been thoroughly professional from the outset and a delight to work with. Cannot recommend enough.

Great agency. Have used Dev Partners for several years and they have built 20+ sites for us, in addition to taking on our legacy websites, upgrading and maintaining. Easy to work with and some great practical ideas to improve our digital offerings.

Jones Hire have been working with Dev Partners on several projects, which have been very successful. They linked our catering database to a new improved website so clients can easily place and update orders, created a custom warehouse picking app to fulfil all our challenging requirements, and are currently developing a custom transport app to streamline our loading and delivery process.

We have been trying to reinvent our website for over 5 years, trying to make it convert and failing each time. Spoke to Rob at Dev Partners, the team helped create our new site and the improvement was instant.

We have been working with Rob and the team for about 10 years now. Dev Partners helped us build a completely bespoke CRM from scratch which manages our daily business and is always well maintained. We have been able to use the system and roll it out in our new franchise branches.

We collaborated with Dev Partners on the front end of a fairly complex telemarketing platform. Rob and Jason took the time to properly understand the moving parts, asked the right questions, and delivered a clean, intuitive interface that's made the system far easier for our team to use.

I have been working with the team at Dev Partners for the last 3 years and we have always been impressed with the speed in which they act on things for us, along with the honest open communication. The team are a valuable and vital part of our supply chain.

We've had a program for our business in the electronic security sector that Dev Partners developed and keep up to date. They've never let us down, always there when needed. Thanks Rob and the team.

Dev Partners have been working with us for just over 2 years. They have significantly upgraded and redesigned our existing web platforms, and always deliver a first class service.

Dev Partners helped us build an event website. The team were very knowledgeable, easy to work with and quick to deliver a high quality product.

Working with Dev Partners has been an exceptional experience. Their team is highly skilled, professional, and committed to delivering results. What truly sets them apart is their communication and transparency; we always felt informed, supported, and confident.

We've worked with Dev Partners a few times to support us on bespoke web build tasks. They're very easy to work with, approachable, and explain the detail in a way that's understandable. A great partner for technical issues at sensible prices.

Excellent customer service backed up with solid experience. As a media business we have had five websites built by Dev Partners. I would certainly recommend them.

Found Dev Partners and they were great, nothing too much trouble. They managed to help us with integrating our old existing system with Shopify.

I've worked with Rob and his team off and on for many years and have always found them to be professional, knowledgeable, and best of all, they listen to their clients and deliver what is required.

We have worked with Dev Partners for 7 years and can highly recommend them for their expertise and excellent customer service.

WooCommerce to Shopify: common questions

What comes up on the first call, roughly in the order it comes up.

Most take between 6 and 16 weeks. The size of the catalogue matters less than two other things: how many plugins are doing something the store genuinely depends on, and how much of your theme's behaviour was built in PHP rather than configured.

A store running a stock theme and a dozen well-known plugins moves quickly. A store with a heavily customised child theme, bespoke plugin code and a subscriptions or bookings layer takes longer to do properly. You get a real timeline after the audit, not a number designed to get the job signed off.

Not if the redirects are done properly. WooCommerce URLs are typically /product/{slug}/ and /product-category/{slug}/; Shopify uses /products/{handle} and /collections/{handle}. Every URL changes. That sounds alarming and it is entirely routine.

We map every existing URL to its Shopify equivalent and implement the 301s before go-live, and migrate meta titles, descriptions and image alt text. Expect a short wobble for a few weeks while Google re-crawls. You should not expect a lasting drop, and anyone telling you a migration carries no ranking risk at all is overselling it.

Products including variable products and their attributes, product images, categories and tags, customer accounts, full order history, product reviews, coupons, and your WordPress pages and blog posts.

Anything without a direct Shopify equivalent is either mapped to the nearest sensible structure or stored in metafields rather than quietly dropped. We tell you which of your data falls into that category before the migration, not afterwards.

Most of them go, and that is usually the point of moving. A large share of a typical Woo plugin stack exists to patch things Shopify does natively: checkout behaviour, payment gateways, caching, security, image optimisation, basic SEO.

During discovery we go through your plugin list one by one and sort it into three piles: replaced by native Shopify functionality, replaced by a Shopify app, or needs rebuilding as custom code. You get that list with the quote, so you know what survives the move before you commit to it.

Yes, and there are two sensible options. We can migrate your posts into Shopify's own blog, which keeps everything on one platform and one domain with no extra hosting to pay for.

Or, if you have a large content operation and editorial workflows you do not want to lose, we can keep WordPress running purely as the blog on a subdirectory or subdomain with Shopify handling the shop. We will give you a straight recommendation based on how much content you have and who publishes it.

Yes. Your WooCommerce store stays live and selling while we build the Shopify store in parallel. Go-live is a planned DNS switchover, not a shutdown.

We do a final data sync immediately before the cutover so recent orders and customers come across, and orders in flight are handled deliberately. A well-planned switchover usually means less than an hour of interruption, scheduled for your quietest trading window.

Not on the headline number, and we will not pretend otherwise. WooCommerce itself is free; Shopify has a monthly fee.

The honest comparison is total cost once you include managed hosting, SSL, backups, a security service, paid plugin licence renewals, and the developer time spent on WordPress core, PHP and plugin updates that keep the thing running. For most stores that adds up to more than a Shopify plan, and it arrives as unpredictable maintenance rather than a fixed monthly figure. For a small store on cheap shared hosting with few plugins, WooCommerce may genuinely be cheaper, and we will say so.

Thinking about leaving WooCommerce?

Tell us about your store and we will give you a straight view on what the move would involve.

You do not need to know what the answer is. The store URL and a rough idea of your catalogue size is enough to start. If we think you are better off staying where you are for now, we will tell you that instead.

What we will cover:

  • Your catalogue size and how your variable products are structured
  • Which plugins are load-bearing and what replaces each one
  • What happens to your URLs, rankings and blog content
  • Any integrations that need rebuilding on the other side
  • A realistic timeline and a fixed price, in writing

One of us replies within one working day, usually the same one.
