Visualsoft to Shopify · The Guide

The complete Visualsoft to Shopify migration guide

What a migration from Visualsoft to Shopify actually involves, stage by stage, plus a pre-migration checklist and the questions that decide whether it goes smoothly or painfully.

Migrating off Visualsoft, explained without the jargon

With Visualsoft moving its customers onto Shopify, a lot of retailers are facing their first replatform in years. This guide walks through the whole process the way we actually run it, so you know what good looks like, what the real risks are, and what to ask any agency before you commit, whether that is us or someone else.

A Visualsoft to Shopify migration is not a simple export and import. The value is in the detail: mapping data that does not line up cleanly between the two platforms, rebuilding custom functionality that has no direct Shopify equivalent, and preserving years of SEO through careful redirects. Get those right and you move across cleanly. Get them wrong and you spend the next year fixing it.

Already Proven

This isn't theory — we're migrating Visualsoft stores right now.

Dev Partners is actively migrating Visualsoft customers to Shopify independently of Visualsoft. The process below is the one we use in practice, not a generic replatforming checklist.

A Visualsoft to Shopify migration in seven stages

Every store is different, but a well-run migration moves through the same stages in roughly this order.

1

Audit & scope

Catalogue every part of your Visualsoft store: products and variants, customer and order data, custom functionality, integrations, and the URLs that carry your SEO. This is where the real scope of the project is established, before any build begins.

2

Data export & mapping

Extract your products, customers and order history and map Visualsoft's data structure onto Shopify's. Attributes, categories and metafields rarely line up one-to-one, so this mapping is where clean data is won or lost.

3

Store build & design

Build the Shopify store and theme, matching or improving on your current design and making sure it is fast, responsive and easy to manage. This runs in parallel with data work on a staging store, not on your live site.

4

Custom functionality

Identify everything your Visualsoft store does that is not standard ecommerce — custom pricing, account-based access, bespoke integrations — and rebuild each properly in Shopify, with apps or custom code as appropriate.

5

SEO & 301 redirects

Map every old Visualsoft URL to its new Shopify equivalent and build the 301 redirects. Visualsoft's URL patterns are specific; a generic redirect approach loses rankings that took years to build.

6

Staged go-live

Test the full store on staging, then switch over in a controlled window with the old store available as a fallback. The aim is zero impact on trading during the cutover.

7

Post-launch support

Monitor redirects, indexing, integrations and performance after launch, and fix anything that surfaces. The first few weeks after go-live matter as much as the build itself.

Your pre-migration checklist

Work through this before you brief anyone. It will make scoping faster and quotes more accurate.

  • List your catalogue size: number of products, variants and collections.
  • Note every custom feature your store has that is not standard Shopify (custom pricing, trade/wholesale accounts, bundles, configurators, anything bespoke).
  • List your integrations: ERP, warehouse/fulfilment, accounting, email/marketing, reviews, search, payment providers.
  • Export or document your current URL structure so redirects can be mapped.
  • Confirm what customer and order history you need migrated (and any loyalty or store-credit data).
  • Gather your current organic traffic and top landing pages, so SEO can be protected and measured.
  • Clarify your contract position with Visualsoft: notice period, exit terms, and what you would still pay after moving.
  • Decide your design intent: like-for-like rebuild, or a redesign as part of the move.

Discuss your migration

Visualsoft to Shopify migration: your questions

How long does a Visualsoft to Shopify migration take?
It depends on catalogue size, the number of integrations, and how much bespoke functionality needs rebuilding. A straightforward store can move in a few weeks; complex stores with deep ERP integration take longer. We scope it up front so you have a realistic timeline before any work starts. See our migration timeline for typical phases.
Do I have to use Visualsoft to move to Shopify?
No. Shopify is an open platform and you can use any Shopify partner. Visualsoft are positioning themselves as a migration partner for their customers, but that is a commercial choice, not a technical requirement. Dev Partners migrates Visualsoft stores independently. We cover the trade-offs on our leaving Visualsoft page.
Can I migrate from Visualsoft to Shopify myself?
For a small, standard catalogue with no custom functionality, a capable team can manage a basic migration. The risk is in the detail: data mapping, rebuilding bespoke features, and redirect mapping for SEO. Those are exactly the areas where DIY migrations tend to lose data or rankings.
Will I lose my SEO rankings?
Not if it is handled correctly. SEO is preserved through careful 301 redirect mapping from your Visualsoft URLs to the new Shopify URLs. A well-run migration holds rankings and often improves them over time as Shopify's performance advantages take effect. Our data migration guide covers redirects in detail.
What data can be migrated?
Products and variants, collections, customer accounts, complete order history, and associated metadata can all move across. The data structures differ between Visualsoft and Shopify, so there is skilled mapping work involved to make sure nothing is lost or corrupted.
What is the biggest risk in a Visualsoft migration?
Two things: losing SEO through poor redirects, and under-scoping custom functionality that has no direct Shopify equivalent. Both are avoidable with a proper audit at the start, which is why stage one matters so much.
